Tombstones at the Jewish cemetery
Over a hundred women, men, and children who were persecuted under the Nazi regime are buried at the Jewish cemetery in Neustadt in Holstein. Most of them had been deported from the Stutthof concentration camp across the Baltic Sea to the Bay of Lübeck in 1945 and were murdered in Neustadt on May 3, 1945.
Regional
historian Dietrich Mau (Neustadt) and Jewish studies scholar Walter Schiffer (Borken) are currently compiling the first comprehensive documentation of the gravestones on behalf of the Cap Arcona Documentation Center. They are transcribing the inscriptions, translating them, and entering the results into a database maintained by the Steinheim Institute for German-Jewish History in Essen.
On Thursday, November 26, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., Dietrich Mau and Walter Schiffer will present their findings at the zeiTTor Museum, Haakengraben 2–6, in Neustadt in Holstein.

- History of the Jewish Cemetery in Neustadt in Holstein (Dietrich Mau)
- Commemoration in Jewish tradition, the self-understanding of a Jewish cemetery, and the structure of the inscriptions (Walter Schiffer)
