Three Guided Tours for Cemetery Day

On the third weekend in September, guided tours will take place at three locations in Haffkrug and Neustadt in Holstein as part of the nationwide Cemetery Day. The events are a collaborative project of the association Zukunft braucht Erinnerung e.V., the Cap Arcona Museum, regional researcher Dietrich Mau, and the Association of Friends and Supporters of the Museum of the City of Neustadt in Holstein.

Cap Arcona Cemetery in Haffkrug
On Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 10:30 a.m., Helmut Kurth will lead a tour of the Cap Arcona Cemetery in Haffkrug. The cemetery is a memorial site for the victims of the shipwreck and for those persecuted by the Nazi regime from 17 nations: inmates of the Kiel-Hassee labor education camp, forced laborers, displaced persons, and the deceased who were reinterred from other locations.
Information panels recount the history of the Polish victims and restore the names of 185 women, men, and young people.
Meeting point: Cemetery entrance on the B 76 (at the Haffkrug town limits—toward Süsel/Eutin). Free parking is available at the memorial cemetery.

Jewish Cemetery in Neustadt in Holstein
On Sunday, September 20, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., Dietrich Mau will lead a tour of the Jewish cemetery.
The tour will focus on the planning, design, dedication, and closure of the Jewish cemetery between 1945 and 1950. He will highlight individual gravestones and the biographies of those buried there.
Another topic is the history of Jewish people in Neustadt in Holstein from 1847 to 1950. Examples include the former sanatorium and nursing home (formerly the state hospital) and the Jewish DP camp established in 1945.
Meeting point: at the gate of the Jewish cemetery on Grasweg. Male guests are asked to wear head coverings when visiting the Jewish cemetery. Free parking is available on Grasweg.

Cap Arcona Memorial Cemetery in Neustadt in Holstein
On Sunday, September 20, 2026, at 4:00 p.m., Daniela Martin will provide information about the origins, spatial layout, and architectural changes of the Cap Arcona Memorial Cemetery. Surrounded by poplar trees and a stone wall, the cemetery features a memorial and gravesites for 621 victims who died during the bombing of the ships Cap Arcona and Thielbek. An annual memorial service is held here on May 3.
Meeting point: Entrance to the Cap Arcona Memorial Cemetery on Stutthofweg. Paid parking is available along the riverside path.
