Cycle tour Death March Sarau 1945

The Ahrensbök Memorial invites you to join a bicycle tour along the route of the death march taken by concentration camp prisoners 81 years ago on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. The tour will be led and narrated by memorial staff member Sven-Michael Veit. 
The approximately 20-kilometer tour begins and ends at the memorial site. Stops include the death barns in Siblin and Sarau, the estate of the march’s commander, SS-Oberscharführer Max Schmidt, in Neuglasau, and the Ahrensbök cemetery.
Hundreds of prisoners died on this march; the bombing of the concentration camp ships “Cap Arcona” and “Thielbek” in Lübeck Bay on May 3, 1945, claimed more than 7,000 lives, with only a few hundred surviving.

Route: 20 km, approx. 3.5 hours (with a break at Café Sarau), partly on forest and field paths, bring your own bike
