Draw your own Cap Arcona

03.06.2026

Under the title "Graphic Novels – Stories in Places and Pictures," a project by the Neustadt Children’s and Youth Network invites teenagers and young adults to develop their own illustrated stories on the theme of the shipwreck during a full-day workshop.

The announcement reads:
How do you tell a story in a way that really gets under your skin? In this workshop, you’ll develop your own characters and settings—inspired by the events surrounding the end of the war in 1945 in Neustadt in Holstein and the Cap Arcona tragedy.
Together, we’ll explore questions like:
What happened back then?
Were there young people who witnessed it?
And what do these places look like today?
We’ll research, share ideas, and go on a treasure hunt for clues in the city ourselves. In the end, we’ll create a collaborative map of the most important locations—along with your own illustrated story. This will allow other young people to continue their research and understand what happened here.

Date: Saturday, June 20, 2026, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Location: Ostholstein District Youth Welfare Office (Neustadt location), Burgstraße 1, 2nd floor, 23730 Neustadt i. H.
Joining us: Graphic novel artist Marius Schmidt (“Aale und Gespenster”)
Participation: Free of charge, for everyone between the ages of 13 and 29. Food and drinks will be provided.
